Meet Karen
“For me, a love of animals began as a young child. I have always owned a cat or a dog; I believe having a pet is an important part of growing up as it teaches us compassion and responsibility. At sixteen, I became a vegetarian once I’d become aware of intensive farming systems and animal welfare. Pets depend on us for so much and when we take a dog into our lives, we need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.
Living on an organic farm with an awareness of nature and providing habitats for wildlife is a very important part of my life. Opening Tragumna Boarding Kennels was a natural progression. When I opened in 2007, there were no other kennels in Skibbereen. I had good support and encouragement from my local veterinary clinic and so the kennels began!
I have met wonderful people and their pets down through the years and have the most loyal clients. This has meant a lot to me as it means I have known dogs from being little puppies until their end of days. A bond develops between us and I hope this has made it easier for owners to leave their pets as they head away. I cater for dogs with special dietary needs and administer any medication, as necessary. I’m always aware that each dog has a different temperament, personality and special requirements and of course, how precious they are to their family.”

The Setting
Tragumna Boarding Kennels are nestled between Tragumna and Trallispean, 15 minutes from Skibbereen town. It is a small kennels set on an organic farm, surrounded by large fields and open spaces. The focus is on personal attention and a quality experience.
Organic Living
Karen grows purple flowering phacelia in abundance for the bees as they adore it. The family’s farming practice encourages wildlife habitats and there are several bee hives and bird boxes on their farmland. Karen also grows her own vegetables and salads in her poly tunnel.
Animal Love
Nacho and Ramses, the pet pygmies are very popular in the kennels and it’s easy to see why.
Daily Routine
The kennel day starts at 8:00am when all dogs are walked and fed.
Dogs are put into the outdoor runs during the day enclosed by 2.5 meter fencing.
Walks are repeated at lunchtime and again in the evening at 7:30pm.
Dogs are then fed, each given a treat, lights are turned off, Lyric FM is left on and the doors and gates are securely locked and closed for the night.
